One thing I was thinking about: In an effort to start collaborating right away, what about going to the employees to explain that Acme values the "wisdom of crowds" and wants to capture the intelligence of the employees as a group in order to build a stronger employee community, enhance the corporate culture, and ultimately benefit the employess because they could learn from each other via a different way other than email/vmail etc. Depending on the general skillset of the employees, wiki may need to be described (benefits/drawbacks) and demo'd. Then ask them to provide ideas for the "policy." How could a wiki be used? Who could manage it? Who would "control" it? Would employees like you use this? How could we, Acme leadership, capture and learn from the group in a way that was legally compliant and non-inflammatory? What features would the group want to see? What are their expectations with something like a wiki?
Then the Acme leadership "board" (COO, CEO, CFO) could review the ideas/submissions and implement what they felt was appropriate, thus making the skeptic leaders still feel they have a sense of control for the implementation and use. The expectations would have to be set with the employees that not ALL policy ideas would be applied but I think that the employee base would have more of an emotional positive reaction to just being asked directly about what they would like to see/want/use.

Can anyone help me to know the name of the one song / one dance we viewed in Riverdance.....? Want to go directly to it, without viewing all the songs/dances? Great question we reflected on.....what would they need to 'learn' to master that dance!

Hi to all.....now back and melting in Dubai! Am wondering if I'm missing the content regarding Mobile Devices (end of our Day 3, which Elliott was going to add). It's most probably somewhere I'm not looking!! Look forward to knowing about how the mobile devices capabilities are evolving, and how they will be able to support the idea of learning anywhere, anytime, with a student simply doing his reflections, or adding to a wiki, whilst waiting for the dentist., for example. (At least it would take his mind off the needle!!) I suppose my dream is that I work with a group in a Moodle environment, yet they can take any part of the content from Moodle, onto their mobile phone, and use it when it fits their life, and yet meet 'classroom required deadlines', allowing the merging of lifestyle, formal and just-in-time learning and reflections.

Hey all. I truly enjoyed meeting everyone this week and look forward to our collaboration over the next year and beyond. It would be great if we can all get back together once or twice a year, but i said that after graduating from college also...
For those I didn't talk to, I'm a Program Manager/Instructional Designer with Cisco. I truly believe much more in knowledge management (refered to this week as performance support). Tacit knowledge (i.e. wisdom of the crowds) and explicit knowledge (i.e. formally writen content) is truly what is most important. Why waste time away from job productivity in ILT or e-learning if our human memories are going to erase that anyway? Elliot's french fries example in his Podcast for Learning is the best example. Remember what Elliot said about the optics of learning as well. Knowledge or procedural information at the point of need is key. Then, experience and exposure over time is what truly builds long term competence.
Anyway, I have an M.S. in Instructional Systems from Florida State University. It was a great place to get started in this field. That said, check out the University of Georgia and what thier Instructional Technology program offers. Believe me....they offer a great program.
Be safe and send me/this board all your awesome design ideas so we can leverage the "wissdom of the crowd.

Read part 1 first to see the Strengths and Weaknesses...
Opportunities: 1) Community can be built globally - more collective to solve problems; 2) Search engines built in collaboration tools, will allow for it to become a performance support tool to break down and analyse information relevant to one's needs; 3) An example from a group member www. askme.com has been using this concept for some time now or a system similar, would allow collaboration and based on an organizational incentive program, could provide opportunities for quickest replies, most effective replies.
Threat: 1) Too much information, where do I start looking? 2) Cultural shift, is our organization ready for this, COO, might really have a hard time if structure or rights are not monitored carefully; 3) Moving to a TOI model (transfer of information) - is the organizational ready to take the information and apply into their daily learning/performance routine; 4) Losing my identity...could employees, units, sections of an organization feel threatened with the now "We" approach vs the "Me" approach - whereby "Knowledge Sharing is Power vs Knowledge is power" respectively.

Strengths: 1) maybe have the CFO, use a collaboration tool with colleagues to come up with some guidelines or standard operating procedures to effectively use collaboration tools to types of collaboration and speed of collaboration...being proactive vs reactive; 2) Time Zones - real plus as one's day finishes in North America, another starts somewhere else in the world, thus 24 hrs development time on challenging issues (by the time we return to work in NA a solution or multiple solutions may be provided, but also new challenges as well);
Weaknesses: 1) Do we already collaborate in the workplace right now on a F2F means, will technology help us to do something that is not already part of our culture?; 2) What is the incentive for one's participation? An employee might say "I am already too busy, why should I join one more thing that may help with my performance on the job, but not proven yet to do this?"; 3) Without context, without timings and when contributions need to be made (a sense of urgency), the potential structure ...are we providing an environment for successful types of collaboration or speed of collaboration;

Many people added comments to this page when there was no initial content. Then, when the content was added, it appeared as though the comments were in response to the content, when in fact they weren't.
On a larger scale, with dynamic content, you have to be especially specific with your comments. If you just comment "I agree." and then the content changes, you've agreed to something completely different.

Exactly! you hit it right on the head as far as the use and "correct" form of wikis.
That is something that we had actually discussed, people understand the difference between the comment and edit this page feature.
Some wikis are set up in tabs, so that it may be more apparent to an inexperienced wiki user.
commenting and replying to commenting and no initial content takes the form of a bulletin board vs an actual wiki.
i suppose the nature of this actual exercise creates a bulletin board atmosphere.
Ideally, I imagine the correct form of a wiki for this exercise would be:
1. The Case Study page would have an explanation of the Case study.
2. Each group would link their "idea" off this orginal case study page.
3. Members within the group would edit their indivual case study page; external users to this group would then use the comment feature for feedback to that group.
With this said, there is no "correct" use of a wiki. But, I see your point and agree.

This is an interesting question...as mentioned earlier people post and want or don't want to be anonymous for different reasons.
Listing the author:
Ego..."look at me, look at what I wrote...recognize me...give me a banana."
Creating discussion and communication -- having a discussion with a known person or group, therefore making it more real
Remaining anonymous:
Confidentiality -- being able to post items that may be useful to bring up, but are sensitive (without being damaging to anyone, of course)
Personality -- I think that introverts may not necessarily feel that they need this sort of recognition (such as myself)
When there are multiple editors/writers -- someone will get in there and re-write (and if someone thinks it's there post that may not go down so well)
Is it better to

Thoughts on increasing the speed and involvement of ACME employee collaboration: Pose issues/challenges in multiple venues that allow rapid and barrier-free idea and thought contributions. Use email, phone, kiosks, wikis, lunchroom groups, bulletin boards (written) avenues for rapid communication - both annoymous and identifiable options.
Previous history of response to collaborative input will determine the level of future participation. Encouragement and motivation will be necessary and the level of trust in management and the degree to which one feels "one" with the culture will drive the cummulative ACME benefits.

Several training departments I've worked for in the past seek control of the training and content--as opposed to other groups assisting or creating their own; thus, creating a culture of control with oftentime highly sanctioned collaboration. Put legal and compliance issues in the mix, and this hampers down collaborative opportunites even more. What have other people done to work through the politics and encourage collaboration...and, frankly, get past the control freaks?

I agree with other's comments that postioning the value of wiki's would help to dissolve siloh or 'Not Invented Here' syndrome for colleagues who are afraid to share expertise and lose control. Gaining agreement for policy, content and governance up front will drive usefulness.
In our horse group we discussed that the corporation gains value in rapid deployment of content and sharing via a wiki. This is high value. However, participation needs reward, so motivating colleagues to share may require creative incentives to reward collaborative behavior.
In my own corporate environment, I can imagine a Wiki site that would provide system engineers (as well as their account managers) to share best practices and lessons learned about implementing technologies with their customers. I could envision SE's sharing how they postioned a new feature with a customer and/or sharing how a specfic technology would solve a customer scenario. Extending that type of 'shared learning' in a wiki would provide opportunities for more engineers to gain access to the group's collective learning. This provides value to the corporation because they learn by sharing remotely, not necessarily by attending a class.

Possible ideas for ACME's Industrial Workforce Collaboration include a Kiosk (as all might not have constant access to PC) with the following collaborative ideas on the kiosk applications: Idea Generation or Process Improvement program; FAQs (Wiki); Wiki tool with rating system; incentive or recognition program for teams with implemented ideas; and maybe a "poll/survey" question of the day that either drives information dissemination or options to do a particular task - gain buy in from the get go.
